GIVING: VALUES & GOALS

Values are the principles by which you act every day, in your job, in your life, in your work, with your friends and relations. Your values permeate everything that you do and should be a reflection of them. In your chosen career, you should be working in a place where the value system is in harmony with your own. This is not to imply that all of your values should be expressed through your work, but there should be an area of common overlap. Here are some sample values that may help you start your own search:

• Justice and fair play: Ensuring that everybody’s rights are respected in the workplace and elsewhere.

• Inclusion: Making sure that the circles you move in are not exclusive or limiting.

• Service to the community: No one is an island. Many of our actions have implications, directly or indirectly for others. The community is a collection of people with different value systems, different goals, but with common interests.

• Excellence: Striving for the best in everything that you do.

• Empathy: Sensitivity to the feelings, needs, wants and desires of others.

A useful exercise is to draft a personal Values Statement and to consult it from time to time.

As part of the holistic examination of your career and life balance, you should consider the key relationships in your life and your impact on each other.
